Last Christmas, in the heart of Myanmar, a dark hole in the ground paved the way to a sanctuary of hope.
Over a hundred people, many women and children, were invited by our partners to gather in a cave tucked away in the middle of a war zone. The people trickled in one by one, feeling tired yet flickering with curiosity and hope. A few lights dotted the walls as our partners welcomed them inside to celebrate a Christmas service in secret.
While sheltered by the cave, the walls shook. Bombs went off above ground, but the people sang. They huddled together, protected and safe, clinging to this moment of peace and believing the future could be brighter for them and their children.
Maybe there would come a day when this conflict would end.
Every day, these people faced hardships only war could bring, with loss of their homes, schools, and loved ones. But for this moment, they sat together on the wet, stony ground. They heard about a babe who came in a manger to bring forth hope and carry on the work of redemption for all people.
A weary world rejoiced.
Christmas is a season of waiting in anticipation. Beyond the stringed lights and gift exchanges, it’s a reminder of what our hearts truly long for: to live in a world filled with peace, love, joy, and hope.
No matter what we’re facing in life, we can know that this is not the end. Hope always wins. Darkness can never overcome the light. We can be bearers of that light, even now, to those in tough places.
Because when we care for the refugee—then comes the light.
