Bible Verses About Orphans

Here are some verses about orphans in the Bible.

There are around 153 million orphaned children in our world today (unicef). It is devastating to consider the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual effects orphanhood has on any child, and even more so to consider those effects spread to 153 million kids. What does the gospel mean to them? Are there Bible verses about orphans?

Here are some Bible verses about orphans that begin to address this issue (read them in context here):

1. Ephesians 1:5

“God predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will–“

2. 1 John 3:1

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.”

3. Matthew 6:26

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

4. James 1:27

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

To children without families, the gospel provides what they no longer have. They can be confident that God sees them and knows them. He cares deeply for them (Psalm 139.) God adopted them into His family and He will never leave nor forsake them. Their membership in that family is eternal and indestructible.

For those reasons, the gospel can provide hope and comfort to the orphan. They can know that God is ever present with them, and He will never, ever leave them. They have a family in all believers.
